WAM to GPA Calculator
Your Australian WAM,
expressed as US GPA.
Enter your Weighted Average Mark (0–100) and choose whether you need the result on a 4.0 or 4.33 scale. The calculator converts it instantly using grade-band-aligned piecewise mapping — no misleading proportional ratios. Essential for Australian students applying to US graduate programmes.
Step by step
How to use this
calculator
This calculator converts a finished Australian WAM score (0–100) to a US GPA equivalent — useful for Australian students applying to US graduate programmes, or for anyone comparing academic records across the two systems. If you haven't calculated your WAM yet, use the WAM Calculator first.
Enter your WAM as a single decimal number
Enter the WAM from your official Australian transcript — for example, 78.5. Don't enter a grade band (HD, D, etc.) or a percentage estimate. Your university's student portal or official academic transcript will show your exact WAM, usually to one or two decimal places.
Choose your output scale — 4.0 for most US applications
Select 4.0 unless you know the specific US programme uses 4.33. Most US graduate programme GPA requirements are stated on a 4.0 scale (e.g. "minimum GPA 3.0"). The 4.33 scale is less common and gives a proportionally higher GPA number — don't use it on a 4.0-scale application form.
Understand that the result is a piecewise approximation — not a simple ratio
Dividing WAM by 25 (e.g. WAM 75 ÷ 25 = 3.0 GPA) gives an accidentally correct answer at the Distinction/Credit boundary, but it breaks at other values. This calculator uses grade-band-aligned piecewise mapping so your GPA falls in the right competitive zone — a Distinction (D) WAM correctly appears as a Distinction-level GPA, not a simple proportional guess.
Use the result to check whether you meet US programme thresholds
Most US master's programmes state a minimum GPA — commonly 3.0, with competitive programmes expecting 3.5+. Compare your converted GPA to the programme's stated minimum. For an official credential evaluation (required by some institutions), a NACES-accredited service like WES or ECE will issue a formal GPA equivalency from your Australian transcript — use this calculator for planning, not for submission.
How it works
The piecewise conversion
from WAM to GPA
WAM and GPA measure the same thing — academic performance — but on completely different scales that don't map proportionally. Dividing your WAM by 100 and multiplying by 4 would put a WAM 75 at GPA 3.0 and a WAM 50 at GPA 2.0, which sounds about right, but it misaligns the grade bands at the critical thresholds. Piecewise linear mapping preserves the HD/D/Cr/P/F boundaries so your GPA lands in the right competitive zone.
This is an approximation — treat it as a planning estimate. The Australian university where you studied doesn't assign GPA; any official GPA equivalent requires a credential evaluation by a NACES-accredited agency.

Real-world outcomes
WAM to GPA conversion
scenarios
These scenarios show how specific Australian WAM values translate to US GPA equivalents — and what that means for US graduate programme applications. The conversion is piecewise, not proportional, so the same WAM gap means different GPA gaps at different parts of the scale.
WAM 82 from UNSW Engineering — converts to GPA 3.42, above the 3.0 minimum at most US programmes
Priya graduated with a WAM of 82 from UNSW (Bachelor of Engineering). She's applying to Master's programmes in the US. Most target programmes list a "minimum GPA 3.0" requirement. Her WAM sits in the Distinction band (75–84).
A converted GPA of 3.49 is just below the competitive threshold for top-20 US programmes but well clear of the 3.0 minimum at a wide range of strong programmes. Priya's WAM 82 in a rigorous UNSW engineering degree should be presented with context — Australian Distinction is a strong signal, and many US admissions readers familiar with Australian transcripts will recognise it. Pairing the converted GPA with a NACES evaluation letter makes the equivalency explicit.
WAM 75 → GPA exactly 3.0 — meets minimum but not competitive for selective US programmes
Daniel graduated from the University of Melbourne with WAM 75 (Bachelor of Science). He's applying to US Master's programmes in biology. Most programmes list a 3.0 minimum; top programmes expect 3.5+ for competitive consideration.
WAM 75 converts to exactly 3.0 — a B equivalent. This meets the stated minimum at most US graduate programmes but leaves no buffer. For programmes where competition is high, a 3.0 converted GPA from an Australian university needs to be supported by strong research experience, publications, or letters. Daniel should also check whether the Melbourne WAM uses the standard 75 Distinction boundary or 70 — the institution's policy affects where 75 sits on the band mapping.
WAM 71 → GPA 2.75 — below the 3.0 minimum at most US master's programmes
Sam graduated from Queensland University with WAM 71 (Bachelor of Commerce). Looking at US MBA and MS programmes that list "minimum GPA 3.0." WAM 71 falls in the Credit band (65–74).
A WAM of 71 converts to approximately 2.72 GPA — below the 3.0 minimum most US programmes state. It's worth noting that a WAM 71 Credit band represents above-average performance in the Australian system — more than half of students pass below Distinction. However, US GPA scales don't reflect this distribution, and admissions committees applying their stated 3.0 floor will see the converted equivalent of a C+ to B−. Sam's options: apply to programmes without a hard floor, strengthen the application with work experience, or improve WAM by completing additional study.

Common questions
WAM to GPA FAQ
How do you convert WAM to GPA?
Piecewise band mapping: WAM 85–100 → GPA 3.7–4.0, WAM 75–84 → GPA 3.0–3.69, WAM 65–74 → GPA 2.3–2.99, WAM 50–64 → GPA 1.5–2.29, below 50 → GPA 0–1.49. Each band interpolates linearly within its range.
What is WAM 85 in GPA?
Approximately GPA 3.7 on the 4.0 scale — the HD/D boundary in Australia, equivalent to roughly A− in the US system.
What is WAM 75 in GPA?
Approximately GPA 3.0 — the Distinction/Credit boundary, equivalent to roughly B in the US system and the threshold many US graduate programmes require.
What is WAM 65 in GPA?
Approximately GPA 2.3 — the Credit/Pass boundary, equivalent to roughly C+ in the US system.
What is WAM 70 in GPA?
Approximately GPA 2.65 on the 4.0 scale — mid-Credit band, roughly B− in the US system.
Is the conversion exact?
No — it's an approximation. The two scales have different structures. Individual US universities may use their own conversion. For official use, get a credential evaluation from a NACES-accredited service.
Which GPA scale should I use?
Choose the scale your target institution uses. Most US universities use 4.0. The 4.33 scale is less common at undergraduate level.
Does this calculator save my WAM?
Yes — auto-saved in your browser's localStorage. Returns on your next visit on the same device and browser.
What GPA is needed for US graduate school?
Most programmes require minimum GPA 3.0 (WAM ~75). Competitive programmes often expect 3.5+ (WAM ~82). Requirements vary widely — check each programme.
What's the formula?
For example, in the HD band: GPA = 3.7 + ((WAM−85)/15) × 0.3. Each band uses its own WAM and GPA endpoints. For 4.33 output: GPA_4.33 = GPA_4.0 × (4.33/4.0).
What is WAM 80 in GPA?
Approximately GPA 3.35 on the 4.0 scale — mid-Distinction band, roughly B+ in the US system. Strong performance well above the typical 3.0 graduate school minimum.
Do I need a credential evaluation service for my WAM?
For official applications, a NACES-accredited credential evaluator like WES (World Education Services) or ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators) will produce an official GPA equivalency from your Australian transcript. This calculator is a self-service planning tool, not an official document — use it for understanding your competitive position, not for submitting on application forms.

The WAM-to-GPA conversion bands used here align with grade band definitions published by major Australian universities including the University of Melbourne, University of Sydney, and the Australian National University. US GPA standards are documented by NCES IPEDS. For the reverse calculation, use the GPA to WAM Calculator. To calculate your WAM from individual marks, use the WAM Calculator.
Because there's no single universal conversion standard, US universities evaluating Australian transcripts may apply their own equivalency table. If you're submitting an official application, report your WAM as-is and let the institution apply their conversion. Use this calculator for personal planning, target-setting, and understanding which competitive bracket your WAM places you in when looking at US programmes that list GPA requirements rather than WAM thresholds. For official credential evaluation, consider a NACES-accredited service such as WES (World Education Services) or ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators), which will produce an official GPA equivalency letter from your Australian transcript.
