GPA & Grades — Specific Questions Answered
Detailed answers to questions that don't fit neatly on a calculator page — employer policies, institutional rules, international systems, specific scholarships, and grading edge cases.
GPA Meaning & Benchmarks
What is a good GPA in college?
3.0 meets most minimums; 3.5 is competitive for most grad programs; 3.7+ for the most selective. How to benchmark your GPA by goal.
What is a 3.5 GPA?
A strong B+ average — above most scholarship and employer screens, competitive for most graduate programs.
What is a 4.0 GPA?
A perfect A average — the maximum on the standard unweighted scale. When it matters and when it doesn't.
What is a 3.0 GPA?
A straight-B average — meets most minimum thresholds but is below the competitive average at selective programs and employers.
What is a 2.0 GPA?
A C average — the most common threshold for academic good standing, graduation eligibility, and federal financial aid (SAP). Below this triggers probation.
The 4.0 GPA scale explained
How the 4.0 scale converts letter grades to grade points — including plus/minus grades, weighted high school GPA, and how colleges recalculate.
Career & Employers
Do employers check GPA?
About one-third of employers screen by GPA. 3.0 is the most common cutoff — but industry and company size change the equation significantly.
Does GPA matter after graduation?
GPA matters most in the first 1–2 years. Most employers stop asking after 2–3 years of work experience — but grad school applications always include it.
GPA requirements for internships
Finance and consulting screen at 3.5+; most employers use 3.0. When to list GPA on a resume and how to navigate below the cutoff.

Scholarships & Programs
National Merit Scholarship GPA requirement
Selection is based on PSAT/NMSQT scores, not GPA — but school endorsement of your academic record is required to advance to Finalist.
Fulbright Scholarship GPA requirement
No published minimum GPA. The program evaluates project quality and cross-cultural potential — not a number.
Peace Corps GPA requirement
No published minimum. The Peace Corps selects on skills, experience, and mission fit — not GPA.
Rhodes Scholarship GPA requirement
No published minimum. Four-part selection criteria — academic excellence is one part, alongside character, leadership, and service.
Gates Scholarship GPA requirement
Historical 3.3 minimum for eligibility. Program status — verify at gmsp.org. Selection is holistic and highly competitive beyond the GPA floor.
Honor Societies
Golden Key GPA requirement
Top 15% of students at participating institutions — no fixed GPA number. The threshold varies by school.
Alpha Lambda Delta GPA requirement
Verified 3.5 GPA in the first year of college — a nationally consistent standard from nationalald.org.
Phi Beta Kappa GPA requirement
No national minimum. Each chapter sets its own threshold — typically top 10% in liberal arts and sciences.
Graduation & Academic Honors
Dean's List GPA requirement
No national standard. Most common threshold: 3.5 semester GPA with full-time enrollment. Yours may differ.
Dean's List & honor roll — how it works
Semester-by-semester recognition based on term GPA. Typical threshold: 3.5–3.7. President's List usually requires 3.9–4.0.

Every school sets its own Latin honors thresholds. Common: 3.5 cum laude, 3.7 magna, 3.9 summa — but yours may vary.
Latin honors — cum laude, magna, summa
Fixed GPA cutoffs vs. percentile-based systems. Typical ranges, residency requirements, and how honors appear on your transcript and diploma.
Can you graduate with a 2.0 GPA?
2.0 is the floor at most schools — but your program or major may require 2.5 or 3.0. How to verify your actual requirement.
Academic Policy
Academic dismissal vs. academic probation
Probation is a warning; dismissal ends enrollment. What triggers each, and what the paths forward look like.
F-1 visa GPA requirements
8 CFR 214.2(f) sets no specific GPA number. "Good academic standing" is defined by the institution, not immigration law.
What GPA do you need for grad school?
Stated minimums vs. competitive averages — and why a "3.0 minimum" program often admits no one below 3.3.
GPA requirements for study abroad
Most programs require 2.5–3.0. Competitive programs and merit scholarships want 3.5+. Home institution approval required alongside host program acceptance.
GPA Mechanics
What are quality points?
Quality points are grade points × credit hours. Your GPA is total quality points ÷ total credit hours. A worked example.
How does repeating a course affect GPA?
Grade replacement vs. grade averaging — and why AMCAS averages both grades regardless of your school's policy.
Do transfer credits affect GPA?
At most schools: transfer credits count toward your degree but not your GPA. Medical and law school applications may include them.
Special grade codes on transcripts
W, I, AU, P/CR, NC, IP, NR — what each code means for your GPA and credit hours.
What is a 3.0 GPA?
A 3.0 is a B average on the 4.0 scale — it meets most minimum thresholds but is below the competitive average at selective programs and employers.
Weighted vs. unweighted GPA
Unweighted uses a 4.0 scale for all courses. Weighted inflates AP/IB/honors grades. Colleges almost always recalculate to unweighted.
