CGPA Conversion — 10-Point to US 4.0 Scale

CGPA to GPA — grade-band lookup,
not proportional math.

Enter your CGPA on the Indian 10-point UGC scale and get the US 4.0 GPA equivalent using the same grade-band mapping that credential evaluators like WES use. You'll also see your letter grade, percentage equivalent, and what the number means for US graduate school applications.

How it works

Grade-band mapping,
not proportional math

The wrong way to convert CGPA to US GPA is to use the formula: CGPA ÷ 10 × 4. It looks logical, but it produces incorrect results. A 7.0 CGPA using that formula gives 2.8 GPA — but 7.0 CGPA is an A grade in India, and A corresponds to 3.7 GPA in the US, not 2.8.

The correct method is grade-band mapping: match your CGPA to the Indian grade it represents (O, A+, A, B+, B, etc.), then find the US GPA equivalent for that letter grade. This is what credential evaluators like WES, ECE, and NACES members actually do. It's also what most US graduate admissions offices expect when they say "submit your transcript."

Conversion Logic
CGPA 9.0–10.0 → O grade → 4.0 US GPA
CGPA 8.0–8.9 → A+ grade → 4.0 US GPA
CGPA 7.0–7.9 → A grade  → 3.7 US GPA
CGPA 6.0–6.9 → B+ grade → 3.3 US GPA
CGPA 5.0–5.9 → B grade  → 3.0 US GPA
CGPA 4.0–4.9 → C grade  → 2.0 US GPA

Worked example

Three students,
three conversions

Here's how the conversion works for three different CGPA scores, illustrating why band mapping matters more than proportional math:

StudentCGPAIndian GradeBand Method GPAProportional (Wrong)
Arjun9.2O (Outstanding)4.03.68 ❌
Priya7.8A (Very Good)3.73.12 ❌
Rahul6.5B+ (Good)3.32.60 ❌

Priya's 7.8 CGPA: proportional math gives 3.12, but the correct US equivalent is 3.7 (A-). That's a difference of 0.58 GPA points — enough to change how a US admissions committee reads her application. Rahul's difference is even larger: 2.60 vs 3.3 — half a letter grade off.

This matters especially for graduate school cutoffs. A program that says "minimum 3.0 GPA" isn't necessarily rejecting Rahul — his 6.5 CGPA is equivalent to 3.3, which clears the bar. But if he submits a proportional conversion (2.60), it looks like he doesn't qualify.

US graduate admissions

What your CGPA means
for US applications

US graduate programs reviewing Indian transcripts are generally familiar with the 10-point CGPA system. Here's what different CGPA levels typically mean for your application profile:

CGPAUS GPA Equiv.Competitive for…
9.0+4.0Top programs (MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, CMU), full funding consideration
8.5–8.94.0Top-25 programs, strong research profile universities
8.0–8.43.7Top-50 MS/PhD programs with strong SOP and GRE
7.5–7.93.7Top-50 programs, practical floor for competitive admissions
7.0–7.43.3Many accredited MS programs, competitive with strong profile
6.5–6.93.3Mid-range programs, some top programs with compelling application
6.0–6.43.0Minimum eligibility at most accredited programs
Below 6.0Below 3.0Selective admissions — typically need strong work experience or research

These are general guidelines. Admissions decisions include GRE/GMAT, SOP, LORs, research experience, and field-specific factors. A lower CGPA can be offset by exceptional research publications, strong work experience, or high GRE scores — especially for PhD programs.

Official evaluation

When you need a
formal WES evaluation

This converter gives you a solid estimate for self-assessment and application prep. But some situations require an official credential evaluation:

  • US visa or immigration applications — USCIS and H-1B specialty occupation assessments often require WES or equivalent evaluations.
  • State professional licensing — Engineering (PE), teaching, nursing, and other state-licensed professions require official foreign degree evaluations.
  • Employer-required evaluations — Some US employers, especially federal contractors, require NACES-certified credential reports.
  • Community college enrollment — Many US community colleges require official evaluations for transfer credit or placement.

For US graduate school applications, most universities accept transcripts directly and do their own evaluation — you typically don't need WES unless the program specifically requests it. Check the application requirements for each program you're applying to.

Common questions

CGPA to GPA — FAQ

How do I convert CGPA to US GPA?

Use grade-band mapping: find the Indian letter grade your CGPA corresponds to (O, A+, A, B+, etc.) and match it to the US 4.0 equivalent. An 8.0 CGPA is A+ in India = 4.0 US GPA. A 7.5 CGPA is A (Very Good) = 3.7 US GPA. Never divide CGPA by 10 and multiply by 4 — that formula is wrong.

What is 8.5 CGPA in US GPA?

8.5 CGPA is in the A+ (Excellent) grade band on the Indian 10-point scale — equivalent to 4.0 US GPA. It's a strong score for US graduate admissions and typically competitive for top-25 to top-50 programs.

Is 7.0 CGPA good enough for US MS?

7.0 CGPA maps to approximately 3.3 US GPA (B+ equivalent). Most accredited US MS programs have a minimum of 3.0 GPA, so 7.0 CGPA clears the typical floor. Competitive programs (top-20) generally prefer 8.0+ CGPA (3.7+ GPA equivalent), but a 7.0 with strong GRE, research, or SOP can still result in admission.

Do I need a WES evaluation for US grad school?

Most US universities don't require WES — they review your official transcripts directly and do their own evaluation. Some programs explicitly require WES; check each program's requirements. WES is more commonly needed for US employment, visa applications, and professional licensing.

What is 6.5 CGPA in US GPA?

6.5 CGPA is in the B+ grade band on the 10-point scale, equivalent to approximately 3.3 US GPA. It meets the minimum 3.0 GPA requirement at most US graduate programs and is competitive with a strong overall application.

Is the CGPA to GPA conversion the same for all Indian universities?

The formula is standardised for UGC CBCS institutions (most central universities, IITs, NITs, and newer programs), but older or state universities may use different scales (7-point, 5-point, or percentage-based). If your institution uses a non-standard scale, the conversion bands in this tool may not apply — check with a credential evaluator.

What is 9.5 CGPA in US GPA?

9.5 CGPA is Outstanding (O grade) — equivalent to 4.0 US GPA. This is the highest academic tier and represents near-perfect academic performance across all semesters.

What GPA threshold do US employers use for Indian students?

US employers who check GPA typically use a 3.0 cutoff, which corresponds roughly to a 6.0–6.5 CGPA on the 10-point scale. However, most tech companies hiring directly from Indian institutions focus more on interviews and skills than a specific GPA minimum. Some companies state "GPA 3.5 or equivalent" — that's approximately a 7.5+ CGPA.

Why does my university's percentage give a different GPA than CGPA?

Because the CGPA-to-percentage formula (× 9.5) and the CGPA-to-US-GPA table use different reference points. Converting CGPA to percentage (using × 9.5) and then trying to convert that percentage to US GPA gives a double approximation that won't match the direct grade-band conversion. Always go CGPA → US GPA directly using the band table.

What is 5.0 CGPA in US GPA?

5.0 CGPA is in the B grade band (Above Average) on the UGC scale — roughly equivalent to 3.0 US GPA. This is the practical minimum for most US graduate program eligibility requirements, though competitive programs prefer significantly higher.
