Numeric GPA Reference — 4.0 Scale

4.0 GPA — the ceiling of
the standard scale.

A 4.0 GPA is the maximum on the US standard 4.0 scale. It represents A or A+ letter grades across all your courses. Enter your own GPA below to see its letter-grade equivalent and where it sits relative to 4.0.

What it means

4.0 GPA on the
standard US scale

A 4.0 GPA is the maximum grade point average on the standard US 4.0 scale. To hold a 4.0, every single course on your transcript must carry an A or A+ letter grade — both worth exactly 4.0 quality points per credit hour on this scale.

Quality points are the currency of GPA: multiply the grade's point value by the credit hours, sum across all courses, and divide by total credits. On the 4.0 scale, a 3-credit A earns 12.0 quality points. A 4-credit A earns 16.0. Divide the total by your total credits and you have your GPA.

Example — 60 credits all at A (4.0 pts): Quality Points = 4.0 × 60 = 240.0 QP GPA = 240.0 ÷ 60 = 4.0 Adding one A− (3.7) in a 3-credit course: QP = (4.0 × 57) + (3.7 × 3) = 228 + 11.1 = 239.1 GPA = 239.1 ÷ 60 = 3.985 ≈ 3.99 (rounds below 4.0)

This illustrates why 4.0 GPAs are fragile: a single A− in one 3-credit course out of 60 total credits is enough to drop below 4.0. The more credits you carry at 4.0, the harder a single lower grade can pull it down proportionally — though the absolute magnitude shrinks as your credit bank grows.

Scale comparison

4.0 GPA across
different scales

The number "4.0" means something different depending on which scale your institution uses. On the most common US 4.0 scale, 4.0 is the maximum — you can't go higher. On the 4.33 scale, a 4.0 GPA represents A grades (not A+), with A+ earning 4.33. The same numeric GPA has different letter-grade implications on each scale.

Scale4.0 GPA = Letter GradeMax GPA
4.0 (US standard)A / A+4.0
4.33 (US extended)A4.33
5.0 (some US high schools)B / B+5.0

Note: percentage cutoffs for A vary by institution — most US colleges use 90–93% as the A threshold.

Common questions

4.0 GPA — FAQ

What letter grade is a 4.0 GPA?

A or A+ on the 4.0 scale — both earn 4.0 quality points per credit. On the 4.33 scale, 4.0 GPA corresponds to A (not A+, since A+ earns 4.33 on that scale).

Is 4.0 the highest possible GPA?

On the 4.0 scale — yes. On the 4.33 scale, the maximum is 4.33. On other scales (7.0, 10.0), 4.0 is not the maximum. The answer depends on which scale your institution uses.

How rare is a 4.0 college GPA?

Uncommon. NCES data puts average undergraduate GPAs in the 2.7–3.2 range. A 4.0 requires A or A+ in every course — a single A− across a 60-credit record drops below 4.0.

What percentage score is a 4.0 GPA?

Most US institutions define A as 93–100% (some use 90–100%). A+ is typically 97–100% where offered. Check your school's grading scale for the exact threshold.

Does a 4.0 GPA guarantee admission to top graduate schools?

No — a 4.0 undergraduate GPA is a strong signal, but graduate admissions also weigh GRE/GMAT scores, research experience, recommendations, and fit. Many applicants with 4.0 GPAs are not admitted to highly selective programs for other reasons.

What is the difference between 4.0 GPA and 4.0 scale?

"4.0 GPA" is a grade point average value (the number itself). "4.0 scale" refers to the grading system where 4.0 is the maximum. You can have a 3.5 GPA on the 4.0 scale — the scale defines the ceiling, the GPA is your actual average.
