The official GPA requirement
Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) is a national honor society recognizing first-year academic achievement. Per nationalald.org, the GPA requirement for membership eligibility is a 3.5 GPA in the first year of college (or the first year of enrollment at a new institution, in some cases). This threshold is set nationally — individual chapters apply the same 3.5 standard rather than setting their own thresholds.
This makes ALD relatively straightforward compared to honor societies like Phi Beta Kappa, where each chapter independently defines eligibility. The 3.5 floor is consistent and publicly documented by the national organization.
Verified source: The 3.5 GPA requirement is confirmed by nationalald.org, the official Alpha Lambda Delta national website, under membership eligibility criteria.
What "first year" means in practice
The "first year" GPA requirement is based on first-year college performance — not high school GPA. In practice:
- After first semester: Some chapters invite eligible students after the first semester, when students have a semester GPA of 3.5 or above on a full course of study. This is sometimes called a "provisional" invitation.
- After first year: Other chapters wait for the completion of the full first year (both fall and spring semesters) and invite students who have maintained a 3.5 cumulative GPA across the year.
- First-year status: Students who entered as transfer students with advanced standing may have their first-year GPA evaluated differently — the chapter at your institution is the authoritative source on how transfer entry is handled.
How the invitation process works
Alpha Lambda Delta membership is offered by invitation. The chapter at your institution receives GPA data from the registrar (with student permission and under FERPA guidelines), identifies students who meet the threshold, and sends invitations. Students do not apply to ALD directly.
Once invited, prospective members typically pay a one-time membership fee to join. This fee covers a lifetime membership — there are no annual dues after the initial payment. The initiation process includes taking an oath, which formalizes membership.
Benefits of Alpha Lambda Delta membership
- Transcript and resume notation of membership in a recognized honor society
- Eligibility for national ALD scholarships (awarded to members for graduate school and additional undergraduate study)
- Chapter programming including academic, professional, and social events
- Connection to a national network of members and alumni who recognized first-year academic excellence
Chapter availability
Alpha Lambda Delta has chapters at hundreds of colleges and universities across the United States. However, not all accredited institutions have an ALD chapter. If your school does not have an active chapter, the organization's national office may have information about starting one or about nearby member institutions. You can verify chapter status through nationalald.org.
Some institutions have honor societies with similar names or missions that are not affiliated with the national Alpha Lambda Delta organization. Verify that your institution's society is the nationally affiliated ALD chapter before assuming the 3.5 GPA threshold and national scholarship eligibility apply.
